We are pleased to report that despite the extreme weather circumstances on January 6thand 7th, our Clubs were open and operating on “off-school” hours. Throughout the winter, we make every reasonable effort to keep our doors open to our members should they need a hot meal or a warm place to go. We salute […]
Each year, our numerous partners help us accomplish our goal of helping youth realize their dreams and reach their full potential, while providing healthy meals and a safe and positive environment. This fall, our partners are helping us offer new, exciting programs and provide our members new opportunities to explore their interests.
The Cooking with Kids Foundation has made a generous donation to our Clubs so we can offer a cooking program to members age 10-13 at Club One. Approximately 28 Club One members will participate in the cooking program. Founded in 2010 by celebrity chef and restaurateur, Guy Fieri, the Cooking with Kids Foundation is dedicated to getting kids in the kitchen so they can learn to cook for themselves, their friends and their family, while instilling self-esteem, self-reliance and a healthy lifestyle. Bon appétit!
Our science programs for youth and high school students are part of our “Academic Success” programs, which help members achieve academic excellence and explore potential career paths. The “I Am Science!” Club at Club One and Club Barreto is for members 5th-8th grades. Mentors from DePaul, Northwestern, Rush and the University of IL at Chicago will lead roughly 45 participants through hands-on science activities in preparation for a mock Science Fair. High school program participants will be serving as citizen scientists, going out into the field to collect nematodes from rotting vegetation to gain a better understanding of DNA, evolution and the efforts of research science.
Approximately 10 members of ULBGC Club Two and Clemente and Wells, along with 200 other Club kids from around the country, helped co-produce the feature film “The Stream.” Youth producers received the opportunity to work behind the camera or in the editing bay as part of the Dreaming Tree Films Foundation project. The majority of all producer revenues will be given to BGCA to support the organization’s youth development programs.
The 2013 Chicago Cubs RBI Fall Ball season is upon us! Our three teams of 13-15 year olds, 16 year olds, and 17-18 year olds participate in practices and division tournaments on the weekends in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The RBI Program’s (Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities) mission is to increase baseball and softball participation among underserved youth, encourage academic achievement, and help participants use the fundamentals of baseball and softball to learn and develop teamwork skills and a sense of personal responsibility. Cubs Care, a fund of McCormick Foundation, generously sponsors the Union League Boys & Girls Clubs RBI program.
And don’t forget! Our annual Gala is right around the corner!
The Union League Boys & Girls Clubs 36th Annual Gala & Benefit will take place on Saturday, November 2, 2013. This year’s Gala, themed “Together,” will bring together our youth with the organization’s partners, sponsors, staff and supporters. Youth members of the Clubs’ First Tee Program will challenge Gala attendees’ golf skills; participants in the ULBGC Ruth Page Dance Program will treat guests to a special performance; and student violinists partaking in our Merit Music Program will serenade attendees as they arrive for the evening’s festivities.
